Martial Arts (Levels 1 and 2)
Learn the eclectic art of Kajukenbo, a combination of Karate, Judo, Jujitsu, Kenpo, and Kung Fu. Students will learn basic kicks, strikes, blocks, stances, kata, and sparring techniques. Berkeley Boosters
The Berkeley Boosters brings Cops and Kids together in a wide variety of activities such as white water rafting, rock climbing, kayaking, bicycling and backpacking.
Chess
Beginner and advanced players alike are invited to join the chess club. Come and work on your game, sharpen your strategy, or challenge a friend - see what you're made of!
Cooking Class
Ever wanted to learn how to cook some of your favorite foods? In this class you'll be using fresh ingredients from the Willard garden to plan and create tasty meals.
Drama
Taught by Mr Rose.
Gardening Class
The Willard garden is a great place to get a little dirty and a lot of satisfaction watching things grow. Each week, spend an hour or so digging in the soil, watering sprouts, and learning how to tend and create a beautiful garden. The gardeners will grow vegetables and herbs for the cooking class to use, as well as for other school events. Let's play in the dirt!
Film Class
This class deals with basic techniques and principles for working with film/video. We examine shots and scene theory, as well as basic editing with iMovie and discuss different types of films (i.e. narrative, documentary, non-narrative/art films). Students work together to create a short film. Digital point and shoot cameras can be used for capturing video. Students will also be working with Garageband to create a soundtrack for the film.
Guitar
Students will have the opportunity to learn how to play guitar. All levels welcome.
Theater Creations
Students will explore modern day issues and develop plays with the use of imagination. Students will aslo have an opportunity to give a modern twist to the classics.
Tennis
Students are taught the game of Tennis and practice the game together.
Y.E.A.H.
Young Entrepreneurs at Haas' afterschool business club teaches principles and real-life lessons of business, finance, and entrepreneurship to excite, educate, and support underserved youth. The club members will work hand-in-hand with mentors on a project that serves and benefits our community.
Gay Straight Alliance (GSA)
Willard's GSA is a part of the GSA Network, which sets out to create safe environments in school for students to support each other and learn about homophobia and other oppressions, educate the school community about homophobia, gender identity, and sexual orientation issues, and fight discrimination, harassment, and violence in schools. All students are welcome.
Willard Press
After School students will learn journalism and newspaper development. Students will report the goings on of the program and produce a monthly newsletter.
Club Scrabble
Students will sharpen their vocabulary and spelling skills in this class. Through activities they will broaden their overall literal knowledge.
Computer Class
Tech Power: Learning just how much you can do with Technology Power! We will explore what is possible to accomplish using computer technology. Come with your ideas: so far we will look into starting a school newspaper and podcast. This class is being instructed by Willard's own Margaret Agbowo.
Art
Students will create art according to a themed project.
Garage Band
Students will learn to use the application GarageBand to make their own music and other creations.
Self Defense
Students will embark on a six week journey to discover what self defense is and how to utilize it. The five fingers of self defense will be covered. 1. Use your head. 2. Use your voice. 3. Use your feet. 4. Use your techniques. 5. Tell someone. (offered in the Spring)
Songwriting
Students will work with an instructor to learn the art of songwriting.
Jazz Band
Students will perform and reherse for Jazz Band.
Ping Pong
Students will learn technique and rules of Ping Pong. All levels welcome!
Sports
Willard's Sports Program brings the students of Willard an opportunity to represent the school while being part of a team. Our student athletes are now playing teams in Berkeley as well as teams from other cities. The sports program at Willard consists of Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Baseball, Softball, Soccer, Tennis, Track, and Cross Country Running. We are very proud of our sports program and its growth and are constantly improving and adding services.
